I've had these Chronofix Mainspring Winders for a few weeks now, and I'm really pleased with them. If you are slow, steady and careful then they get the job done every time. The only problems I have had were when I rushed it and things got a little caught up. Take care to place the staple properly and keep in in place when setting up, then it will be all work well.
The winders are well made with good accuracy, everything fits together very nicely. They're great value, and although they are made from 3d-printed plastic, they seem robust and look like they will last a good while. Perfect for the hobbyist watchmaker. Thanks!
Worked wonderfully first try!
I've used the mainspring winder once. It took quite a while and watching three YouTube videos before I figured out how to position the staple to catch the mainspring. (My winder only had two holes, not four as the instructions state.) But once I figured out how to get it to catch the spring, all went well. I'm not sure I'll remember right off how to use it when I need it again, but I'm sure I will be able to figure it out.
This is s novel mainspring winding system. A caution, you can generate a great deal of torque with these winders so care winding is needed. This is plastic so end clips on springs that engage lugs in the mainspring barrel will dig into the plastic housing and stop complete winding. Add some grease to the outside of these lugs, the side that will rub on the plastic housing wall, to aid final tucking into the sleeve. The staple system is essential to this working and is explained terribly in the instructions. The hole directly adjacent to the shaft is NOT used. The small drilling 2 mm away are used. Tight fit for staples, don't give up. Once properly cut and oriented against the shaft, the shaft when inserted into the spring center and turned a bit will properly engage the spring. I have found when winding that holding the spring receiver tight against the winding knob while also depressing the button on the back of the receiver will keep the spring flat against the winding knob base assuring uniform winding of the spring. Check out "The Second Hand" pod for a very nice review of these. I would recommend these over the cheap Bergeon copies. Perhaps Bergeon as well.
